Welcome to Chiriqui, Panama
Chiriqui is considered first and foremost to be Panama's breadbasket. The slopes of the Volcan Baru are covered in a rich, black and fertile soil that has inevitably made Chiriqui's highlands the agricultural lifeline for the rest of Panama. Virtually everything and anything seems to grow in colorful abundance; everything from potatoes, intoxicatingly sweet oranges, vivid and exotic flowers, strawberries, and of course the province's most recent source for pride, highland coffee whose induction to the international coffee arena has been  well received; all enjoy Chiriqui's rich conditions and all thrive upon Chiriqui's soil.
Boquete and Volcan Areas
Known for their cool, fresh climates and pristine natural environments, these small alpine towns are nestled into a craggy mountain valleys approx. 35km (22mi) north-northeast of David. They are fine places for walking, bird watching, horse back riding and enjoying a change from the heat of the lowlands. Flowers, coffee and citrus fruits are grown in these areas and the town's Feria de las Flores y del Cafe is a popular annual festival held in January. Boquete is a good base for climbing 3475m (11,400ft) Volcan Baru, 15km (9mi)west, or visiting the volcano's 14,300-hectare (35,320-acre) national park.

Temperatures at the top are very cool, particularly during the dry season months when the cool temperatures are accompanied by high winds. Sweaters, jackets, and long pants are highly suggested, in not mandatory. If you plan to spend the night you would be foolish not to bring cold weather gear. Once at the top, good photographic opportunities exist, particularly during the dry season. It is said that you can see both oceans from the top on clear days. During the wet season, expect heavy cloud cover, drizzle, or rain. Extinct for nearly 500 years, the crater is completely covered with growth, as are the crater's walls. Some trails exist on the top, leading to either side of the crater. Other trails to smaller craters also exist, however, it is recommended that you make any attempt with the assistance of a guide.opportunities exist, particularly during the dry season.
